Federal law enforcement agencies are investigating a nationwide campaign of suspicious mailings targeting congressional offices and election facilities across multiple states. The FBI, US Postal Inspection Service, and Capitol Police are coordinating the investigation into envelopes containing white powder that have been sent to more than three dozen members of Congress and election offices in at least 15 states.
Among those targeted are senators from both parties, including Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Alex Padilla, as well as Republicans Mike Rounds, Pete Ricketts, and Ted Cruz. In the House, Democratic representatives including Hakeem Jeffries, Ritchie Torres, Tom Suozzi, Jimmy Panetta, and Seth Moulton reported receiving suspicious mail. The FBI said law enforcement sources indicate more than 100 letters thought to contain white powder are circulating in the mail system. Preliminary testing of several envelopes has found no hazardous substances, though investigations into individual cases remain ongoing.
Investigators have identified several common features among the recovered envelopes. The letters appear to have been processed through a north Texas mail processing center and bear a postmark or stamp reading “Thinking of You.” Federal authorities have alerted congressional staff and House offices to watch for plain white envelopes with these specific markings. The vast majority of the suspicious envelopes were intercepted by postal screening facilities before reaching their intended recipients.
No suspect has been named in connection with the mailings. The timing of the campaign, occurring less than three weeks before the midterm elections, has drawn federal attention as authorities work to identify those responsible. The investigation represents a continuation of concerns raised during previous election cycles, as election officials in 17 states faced similar threats before a previous election.
The FBI stated it is working with law enforcement partners to respond to each incident and identify those responsible for the letters while working to safeguard the public and secure elections.
