The Austin Film Festival has unveiled the recipients of its annual script and film competition awards. The event, now in its 33rd year, processed more than 12,500 entries across various categories. Following preliminary rounds, 78 scripts reached the finalist stage before the festival selected 21 writers and writing teams as award recipients.
The competition winners were announced during an Awards Luncheon held Saturday in Austin, Texas. According to Barbara Morgan, Executive Director of the festival, the awards serve a broader mission beyond recognition. The festival aims to facilitate industry connections and career advancement opportunities for emerging writers, providing them with access to agents, managers, producers, and executives actively seeking new talent.
To support this objective, the festival conducts a Writers Conference and distributes a Producers Book containing finalist projects and contact details for participating writers. Many of the awards include customized fellowship programs offering mentorship, professional guidance, and industry networking opportunities. Winners in the narrative, documentary, and animated shorts categories are eligible for Academy Award consideration.
A judging panel composed of television showrunners, creators, producers, and writers evaluated the winning submissions. The panel members include individuals with credits on series and films such as “Widows Bay,” “The Bear,” “Succession,” and “Parks and Rec.” The festival processes entries across multiple competition categories, with distinct winners recognized in script and film divisions.
