An inquest concluded that Lauren Bennett, a 36-year-old British singer and dancer, died by suicide. Bennett was discovered in Kent on May 29 following what authorities determined was a deliberate act.
Bennett had been a member of the girl group G.R.L. and appeared on LMFAO’s 2011 track Party Rock Anthem, which became one of the most successful songs in modern music history according to Billboard rankings. She also featured in the song’s accompanying music video. Her husband Kenny Wormald told the court that Bennett had mentioned going for a walk on the morning of her death but did not return. When she failed to respond to multiple attempts at contact from family members, her husband and father located her body at a rural location.
The inquest heard evidence that Bennett had been diagnosed with Fragile X syndrome, a genetic condition associated with anxiety, mood instability, and depression. In the months preceding her death, she had experienced a significant mental health crisis, including a period in January during which she was hospitalized under a mental health section after going several days without sleep. At the time of her death, she was receiving care from specialized mental health services but had reacted poorly to medication and expressed hopelessness about her recovery prospects.
Assistant coroner Jyoti Gill noted that Bennett had experienced substantial psychological suffering in the period between her January hospitalization and her death. Pages of farewell notes were later discovered at her residence. Toxicology results showed no alcohol or illicit drugs were present in her system. Bennett’s former bandmates paid tribute to her memory on social media, with G.R.L. expressing their grief at her passing.
