An immersive theatrical production based on the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise will debut at Secret Cinema’s new venue on London’s Greenwich Peninsula. Previews are scheduled to begin Feb. 16, with the official opening set for March 10.
Olivier Award winner George Maguire will star as Captain Jack Sparrow, with actor Phil Daniels, recognized for his roles in “Quadrophenia” and “EastEnders,” cast as Captain Barbossa. The supporting cast includes Lily Blunsom as Elizabeth Swann, Harrison Wilde as Will Turner, and Gleanne Purcell-Brown as Anamaria. Matt Costain, also an Olivier Award recipient, directs the production. Additional cast members are expected to be announced at a later date.
Unlike previous stage versions of the franchise, this production is fully immersive. Rather than screening the entire “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” film, the show incorporates selected film clips alongside substantial set pieces. Over approximately two hours, audiences will be able to move through the sets, interact with characters, and participate in the unfolding narrative, which includes live stunts and a musical ensemble.
The creative team features prominent theatrical and entertainment professionals, including two-time Emmy Award winner Jason Sherwood as production designer and Kait Kerrigan, who wrote the book for the Broadway adaptation of “The Great Gatsby,” serving as theatrical adaptor. Strong advance demand led producers to extend the run by six weeks. This marks the first production at Secret Cinema’s new permanent riverside location, which the company plans to establish as its ongoing home venue. The production is licensed through Disney Theatrical Group.
