Pomona College and Claremont Graduate University have announced a partnership in which Pomona will become CGU’s parent institution, consolidating a relationship that officials said has roots extending over a century within the Claremont Colleges consortium. The two institutions, located minutes apart in the same educational consortium, formalized the arrangement following discussions that commenced in late 2025.
Under the structure of the new affiliation, both institutions will maintain their distinct academic programs, governing boards, and senior leadership positions. However, Pomona will assume authority regarding major institutional decisions affecting CGU. Pomona College President G. Gabrielle Starr characterized the move as an opportunity to leverage the institutions’ historical connection while positioning CGU for its next phase of development.
Officials indicated that while core functions will remain separate, the partnership will create opportunities to identify operational efficiencies through shared infrastructure and administrative resources. CGU is also undergoing an internal reorganization that will consolidate its academic structure into three primary units.
The affiliation remains subject to regulatory approval processes, which officials cautioned can require extended timeframes to complete. Administrators at both institutions project that the necessary regulatory clearances could be obtained as early as June 2027, allowing the formal transition to proceed following that approval.
