Pope Leo, the first United States-born pontiff, has characterized his identity as primarily rooted in his ecclesiastical role rather than his national origin. In an interview with NBC conducted at a papal retreat near Rome, the 70-year-old pontiff emphasized that while he maintains deep affection for his home country, his mission centers on serving as leader of a global faith community.
Reflecting on his personal background, Leo noted his family’s immigrant heritage on his paternal side and acknowledged the complex history on his maternal side. He articulated his appreciation for American principles, specifically citing the nation’s emphasis on freedom, opportunity, and its historical role in welcoming people from around the world seeking new lives.
The pontiff, who spent two decades as a missionary in Peru before his election last year, has maintained a consistent focus on migration issues since assuming office. He has publicly critiqued the immigration policies of the Trump administration, characterizing them as “inhuman.” These statements coincided with tensions between the Vatican and the current US administration over other foreign policy matters, including the pontiff’s strong opposition to military actions in the Middle East.
Leo marked the Independence Day period with remarks addressing American history and values. He visited an Italian island serving as a primary arrival point for migrants crossing from Africa, and he delivered remarks on the eve of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence that observers interpreted as commentary on contemporary political issues.
Regarding potential diplomatic visits, Leo indicated that while he has not yet accepted an invitation to the White House extended through Vice President JD Vance, he expressed interest in traveling to the United States in the future. No specific timeline for such a visit has been established.
