Germany’s Rheinmetall opened a manufacturing facility in Telford, Shropshire, to produce barrels for British tanks and artillery systems, addressing a two-decade gap in domestic production capacity. UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting inaugurated the facility, emphasizing the importance of manufacturing at scale to maintain military advantage. The investment reflects a broader shift in European defense strategy prompted by Russia’s actions in Ukraine and a desire to reduce dependence on US arms supplies.
The factory processes specialized steel alloy cylinders and applies precision manufacturing techniques, including drilling, honing, and rifling operations, before subjecting barrels to extreme pressure testing to enhance durability. The facility will initially produce barrels for NATO-standard 155mm howitzers and will later manufacture 120mm tank barrels for the Challenger 3 tank and future British remote-control howitzer variants. Current capacity stands at 245 barrels annually, with potential expansion to 1,000 units within four to five years if demand warrants such investment.
General Sir Roly Walker, chief of the British general staff, noted that traditional artillery remains essential despite the prominence of drone warfare in recent conflicts, with both sides in Ukraine expending tens of thousands of artillery rounds daily. He highlighted the historical significance of restoring UK manufacturing, as the nation had maintained continuous artillery production through major conflicts for centuries before domestic manufacturing ceased in 1967. The Telford facility represents a symbolic and practical return to that capability.
The investment stemmed from a 2024 agreement between British and German leaders to strengthen European military industrial cooperation. Rheinmetall currently employs approximately 685 workers in Telford overall, with 35 dedicated to the gun hall initially, rising to 100 at full operational capacity. The company has experienced substantial growth since Russia’s 2022 invasion, with its market valuation increasing dramatically as European governments have pursued military modernization and reduced reliance on American defense suppliers.
