ReactOS reaches major milestone with NTFS install support

ReactOS has achieved a major technical advancement by adding support for installing the operating system directly onto NTFS drive partitions. As reported by Phoronix, this capability represents a long-awaited improvement for the open source Windows alternative project.

Previously, ReactOS installations were limited to FAT32 partitions. NTFS, the proprietary filesystem developed by Microsoft with origins in the Windows NT 3.1 release, has become the standard for modern Windows systems since its refinement in Windows XP. Given ReactOS’s objective of achieving binary compatibility with Windows Server 2003, the FAT32 restriction presented a practical impediment to progress.

The newly implemented NTFS driver carries certain limitations that users should be aware of before adoption. According to ReactOS, the driver presently lacks caching functionality, which results in reduced performance, and does not yet include journaling or security features. The development team cautioned on X that undiscovered bugs may still exist within the implementation.

The addition of write support to NTFS represents the conclusion of a development effort spanning nearly a decade. Read-only NTFS capability was integrated into ReactOS in 2016, followed by boot support added to FreeLoader in 2022. Despite these earlier achievements, the operating system remained unable to perform direct installations on NTFS partitions until now.

ReactOS is maintained as a volunteer-driven community project with development coordinated through GitHub and public forums. While the project’s extended timeline and continued alpha status reflect the substantial challenges involved in reimplementing a complex operating system, this latest development moves it incrementally closer to its stated goal of reaching beta status.
