Small businesses in Bilston say Budget failed to deliver the help they need

Following the Chancellor’s Budget announcement on Wednesday, small business operators in Bilston, Wolverhampton, have expressed disappointment with the measures outlined, arguing they do not provide sufficient relief from escalating operational costs.

Kevin Evans, a butcher and business owner, highlighted electricity expenses as a major concern, noting the rapid increase in production costs has forced price hikes for consumers. He cited the example of sausages increasing from £1.50 to £2.50 over a 12-month period. Evans stated that rising National Insurance contributions and the minimum wage increase of 3.9% effective in April make it financially unviable to expand his workforce, forcing him to work extended hours without days off.

Glen Gandy, a plasterer, echoed similar concerns about the Budget’s failure to address his business needs. He expressed skepticism that the minimum wage increase would benefit employers, suggesting it may instead push experienced workers out of employment while failing to offset rising material costs. Gandy noted his fuel expenses alone total approximately £350 weekly for travel around Wolverhampton, while his business has frozen wages for two and a half years to manage cost pressures.

Lutfu Efe, a chip shop owner, reported paying nearly £800 monthly for electricity and £600 for gas, compared to approximately £300 historically. He stated that without government support tailored to small business needs, closures may become inevitable across the sector.

The Budget included provisions such as removal of standing charges from gas bills across England, Scotland, and Wales, extension of VAT cuts on electricity through July, and removal of import taxes on over 100 food products. However, residents and business owners interviewed indicated these measures fall short of addressing their financial pressures.
