Sony brings AI graphics upscaling to the regular PS5

Sony has announced the rollout of Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI-powered graphics upscaling technology developed for the standard PlayStation 5 console. The technology emerged from Sony’s collaborative work with AMD on Project Amethyst and represents an additional performance tier in the company’s AI upscaling capabilities.

The new QSSR system differs from PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which Sony developed for the PS5 Pro and continues to regard as the superior option. According to Sony, the distinction arises from hardware limitations, as the standard PS5 lacks dedicated machine learning processors. Consequently, games using QSSR on the base PS5 are expected to achieve upscaled 1440p resolution outputs, compared to the upscaled 4K capabilities available on the PS5 Pro.

Sony’s principal graphics research and development engineer Daniel Craig explained that developers targeting the PS5 Pro can standardize their output at 4K while adjusting underlying render resolutions, whereas PS5 developers must maintain greater flexibility across multiple graphical parameters. Despite these constraints, Craig noted that QSSR functions as a straightforward replacement for titles already supporting PSSR, requiring only minimal adjustment periods. Sony indicated the technology will be made available to all PlayStation developers working on future releases.

Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are launching as the first major titles incorporating QSSR support, with both games receiving patches today that include the upscaling feature as an optional graphics mode for standard PS5 systems. Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition also becomes available today. Early assessments suggest the technology delivers noticeable improvements in image sharpness and could address persistent graphics quality challenges affecting numerous games released during the current console generation.
