Representatives from producer organizations across Korea, Indonesia, the Philippines, Hong Kong and Taiwan established the Asian Producers Alliance during the Busan International Film Festival’s Asian Contents & Film Market. The founding declaration was presented by Kim Ji-yeon, a producer known for “Squid Game” and board member of the Producers Guild of Korea, which co-initiated the alliance with the Indonesian Film Producers Association.
The coalition emerged from a seminar titled “Empowering Asian Cinema: Solidarity and Creative Alliance,” where industry figures discussed the evolving landscape shaped by streaming platforms and short-form content. Panelists emphasized that international co-production has become integral to the region’s film industry as producers navigate changing market conditions. Several participants highlighted their existing work in cross-border projects, including festival-recognized films and regional collaborations between Korea and Vietnam.
The alliance currently includes five organizations with no involvement from studios, conglomerates or state entities. Its founding structure designates two co-representatives and two co-secretary generals, all serving one-year terms with annual elections. The organization will initially function as a consultative body focused on advancing regional co-productions and protecting intellectual property rights for creators.
Additional producer organizations from Asia may join during the alliance’s first year, with multiple organizations per territory eligible for membership. The coalition plans to convene quarterly through online meetings and hold annual assemblies during the Busan festival’s market. A second seminar addressing creators’ intellectual property is scheduled for December in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
