Stephen Pedley obituary

Stephen Pedley, a prominent figure in the Church of England, died at age 85. He held the position of bishop of Lancaster from 1998 until 2005, serving a tenure of seven years before retiring.

Pedley was born in Coventry to Geoffrey, a priest, and his wife Muriel. He attended Marlborough school in Wiltshire before pursuing a history degree at Queens’ College, Cambridge. He subsequently trained for the priesthood at Ripon College Cuddesdon in Oxfordshire, where he studied under Robert Runcie. Following his ordination in 1966, he began his pastoral work as a curate at Liverpool parish church, one of England’s notable city center churches.

During his early ecclesiastical career, Pedley served in various positions across England and abroad. He held curacies in Liverpool and Holy Trinity Coventry before moving to Kitwe in Zambia’s copper belt, where he served as a priest from 1971 to 1977. Returning to England, he served as vicar in Stockton, rector at Whickham, and residentiary canon at Durham Cathedral. He also held the appointment of chaplain to Queen Elizabeth II beginning in 1984.

Pedley was characterized by those who knew him for his pastoral abilities, his empathy toward congregants, and his distinctive sense of humor. During his tenure as bishop of Lancaster, based in Blackburn, he was described as “the people’s bishop” and noted for his ability to reassure and encourage those in his care. Following his retirement from the bishopric, he became an honorary assistant bishop for the diocese of Newcastle.

Pedley married Mary Macdonald, a clergyman’s daughter and teacher, in 1970. He is survived by his wife, three children—Mark, Andrew, and Philippa—and six grandchildren.
