StudioCanal, Deadpan Pictures Adapting ‘Lottie Brooks’ Book Series

StudioCanal and Deadpan Pictures have announced they are creating a live-action television series based on Katie Kirby’s The Extremely Embarrassing Life of Lottie Brooks book series. The adaptation is being written by Josie Long, known for work on Skins, alongside playwright and screenwriter Holly Phillips, whose credits include The Athena, Get Even, and Dance Academy.

Ailish McElmeel is attached as producer for Deadpan Pictures, the company responsible for Moone Boy and Video Nasty. StudioCanal executives M-K Kennedy and Paul Gilbert are overseeing the project, with Sarah Reese Geffroy providing oversight on behalf of StudioCanal Stories, the studio’s internal book-to-screen production unit. The company’s StudioCanal Kids & Family division will manage worldwide merchandising and licensing rights.

The Lottie Brooks series, published by Puffin, chronicles the experiences of an 11-and-three-quarters-year-old character navigating the transition to secondary school through a comedic lens. McElmeel has characterized the property as a pre-teen take on Bridget Jones. The book series comprises nine titles that have been translated into more than 30 languages and have sold over 3 million copies worldwide.

This marks another literary adaptation for StudioCanal Stories, the label established in 2024 to focus on bringing published works to screen across both film and television formats. StudioCanal has extensive experience with book adaptations, including its Paddington franchise and television series such as the BBC’s War of the Worlds. The studio also has the upcoming limited series How to Stop Time in development, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch and based on Matt Haig’s novel.
