Survey for Jersey children to include social media for first time

Statistics Jersey announced plans to administer a survey to young people covering health, wellbeing, school experiences, and technology use. The 2026 Children and Young People’s Survey will be offered to students ranging from Year 4 through Year 12 and is scheduled to run from 5 to 16 October. Participation in the survey is voluntary and anonymous, with respondents able to complete it online.

A key feature of this year’s survey is the inclusion of new questions about social media applications and generative AI tools, representing the first time such topics have been incorporated into the assessment. The survey will also explore whether young people have caring responsibilities and access to adequate daily food. Officials noted that students were consulted during the development process to ensure the survey addresses issues most relevant to them.

According to Ian Cope, chief statistician, the survey provides essential information about the circumstances and experiences of children and young people on the island. The Government of Jersey plans to use the results to shape policy decisions and enhance public services. A full report is expected to be released in Spring 2027, along with a version designed specifically for use in schools.

The previous survey conducted in 2024 achieved substantial participation rates, with 87% response rates for Years 4 and 8, 84% for Years 6 and 10, and 78% for Year 12, involving a total of 4,360 children.
