Statistics Jersey has announced plans to conduct a Children and Young People’s Survey targeting students from Year 4 through Year 12. The survey is scheduled to run from 5 to 16 October and will be administered online on a voluntary, anonymous basis.
The 2026 iteration of the survey represents a significant expansion in scope compared to previous years. For the first time, it will include questions about social media applications and generative AI tools, specifically examining frequency of use among young people. Additionally, the survey will explore whether participants have caring responsibilities and access to adequate food on a daily basis.
Statistics Jersey officials emphasized that the content was developed with direct input from students to ensure relevance to young people’s concerns. Chief statistician Ian Cope stated that the survey provides essential understanding of children’s lives and noted that new questions on social media, generative AI, caring responsibilities, and food security would contribute to a comprehensive assessment of opportunities and challenges facing the youth population.
The survey results will be used across the Government of Jersey to inform policy decisions and enhance service delivery. A final report is expected to be published in Spring 2027, along with a child-friendly version designed for distribution in schools. The previous survey, conducted in 2024, achieved substantial participation rates, with 87% response from Years 4 and 8, 84% from Years 6 and 10, and 78% from Year 12, involving 4,360 children overall.
