Taiwan-Japan Film Fund Daily Capital Launches at Tokyo Market, Backs Period Romance ‘Love Ends in Bloom’

Daily Capital, a newly established fund dedicated to Taiwan-Japan film and television collaborations, made its debut at the Tokyo International Film Festival market during TIFFCOM’s opening day at the “Taiwan Originals: Project Showcase” event. The initiative aims to accumulate NT$100 million (approximately $3.1 million) for investment across film, television, and animation ventures. Founder Chang Chen-yu disclosed that fundraising efforts have reached 70 percent of the target amount, with operations expected to commence by year-end.

The fund has secured K2 Pictures and Remow as co-development partners in Japan. K2 Pictures, established by producer Kii Muneyuki, encompasses Japanese filmmakers including Iwai Shunji, Miike Takashi, Nishikawa Miwa, and Kore-eda Hirokazu. Remow operates with backing from major Japanese entertainment and media organizations including Shueisha, Toei, Amuse, Shochiku, TBS Holdings, and Fuji Media Holdings, providing access to existing intellectual property collections and distribution infrastructure. Chang outlined that investment levels will adjust based on individual project requirements, with the fund entering projects during development or pre-production phases to contribute to script development and creative team assembly, while maintaining a projected capital recovery timeframe of three years.

The fund’s inaugural investment announcement centers on the television series “Love Ends in Bloom,” a 10-episode historical romance and business drama set in 1930s Chiayi and Alishan. The narrative follows a Japanese geisha pursuing a cross-border marriage plan to aid her mother, subsequently becoming entangled in a forbidden romantic relationship with a Taiwanese timber magnate during the Japanese colonial period (1895–1945) when Taiwan’s cypress industry flourished. The project, written by Juliana Hsu and directed by Sun Jie-heng, is scheduled to commence filming in February 2027, with a targeted mid-2028 release date.

Daily Capital plans to leverage Japan’s intellectual property resources and production expertise alongside Taiwan’s adaptable financing mechanisms and co-production capabilities. The initiative intends to utilize regional production incentives and distribution networks to extend reach beyond Japanese- and Mandarin-speaking audiences. Chang indicated that the fund will assess success based on whether projects secure placement with Japanese broadcasters, regional platforms, and international streaming services while meeting financial projections. Successful outcomes could facilitate fundraising for a subsequent fund targeting broader Taiwan-Japan and Asian co-production opportunities.
