Telford Gun Hall opening marks return of tank barrel production to UK

Large-calibre gun barrel and breech production has resumed in the United Kingdom following the opening of a new manufacturing facility in Telford operated by German defence contractor Rheinmetall. The facility, known as the UK Gun Hall, represents the first such domestic production capability in two decades. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting attended the opening ceremony on Thursday, describing the development as evidence of rapid reindustrialisation and a key component of leveraging defence manufacturing as an economic growth driver.

The Telford facility will produce barrels and breeches for both 120mm and 155mm weapon systems, with initial applications including the RCH 155 platform and future artillery systems. The site has created 100 jobs filled by specialist workers from the local area, who received training at a Rheinmetall facility in Germany covering precision manufacturing, quality assurance, and weapons production techniques. Management indicated plans to expand staffing as production capacity increases to meet current demand.

Rheinmetall is an established participant in UK defence programmes, currently involved in the Boxer combat vehicle initiative and upgrades to Challenger main battle tanks. Armin Papperger, the company’s chief executive, characterised the Telford operation as a significant long-term investment and an important milestone for strengthening domestic industrial capacity. He noted the facility represents only one of two comparable production lines operated by the company globally, and emphasised the importance of local workforce capabilities and motivation for the venture’s success.

Parent company employment in the UK currently stands at approximately 1,300 personnel, with further workforce expansion anticipated as operations develop. Government officials highlighted the achievement as reflective of broader reindustrialisation ambitions and commitment to sustaining well-compensated manufacturing employment across the country.
