Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y can be a backup battery for your house

Tesla has broadened availability of its Powershare Home Backup feature to include the Model 3 and Model Y, extending the capability that was previously limited to the Cybertruck. The feature enables EV owners to draw power from their vehicle’s battery to maintain home electricity during power disruptions, provided they own one of Tesla’s Powerwall battery systems.

Currently, the feature operates with Powerwall 3, though Tesla indicates that compatibility with Powerwall 2 and Powerwall Plus models will arrive in the near term. According to Tesla’s specifications, the extended backup capability on Premium and Performance versions of the Model 3 and Model Y can sustain home power for more than two days, which exceeds the duration available from many traditional backup systems but falls short of the three-plus days offered by the Cybertruck’s larger battery.

The automaker has confirmed that the Home Backup feature will be guaranteed only on Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered from October 1st onward, as older models lack the necessary PCS2 Lite inverter hardware required for the bidirectional charging capability. The feature remains limited to availability in the US and Puerto Rico at present, with no current support announced for Canada or for the larger Model S and Model X variants. Additionally, Tesla’s separate Powershare Grid Support feature, which enables grid services functionality, continues to be exclusive to Cybertruck owners.

The capability places Tesla among several automakers developing vehicle-to-home technology. Competitors including Kia and GM have introduced similar bidirectional charging features on their electric vehicles, while Nissan’s Leaf model has offered power-to-grid functionality for an extended period.
