Universal Pictures has officially announced the title for its fourth installment in “The Mummy” franchise, which will be called “The Mummy: The Book of the Dead.” The film reunites actors Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, who will reprise their roles as Rick and Evie O’Connell. The ensemble cast also features returning players John Hannah, Michael Johnston, Numan Acar, Kevin J. O’Connor and Oded Fehr. Universal plans to distribute the film in theaters on October 15, 2027.
Fraser and Weisz first collaborated on the original “The Mummy” in 1999, which became a blockbuster and spawned a franchise. The pair reunited for 2001’s sequel “The Mummy Returns,” though Weisz did not appear in the third entry, 2008’s “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.” The franchise has previously included the 2002 spinoff “The Scorpion King” featuring Dwayne Johnson.
The directorial team behind “The Mummy: The Book of the Dead” consists of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who work under the collective name Radio Silence. The duo gained recognition through 2019’s “Ready or Not” and 2022’s “Scream” reboot for Paramount. David Coggeshall has penned the screenplay, with credits including “The Family Plan” and “Orphan: First Kill.”
Producer Sean Daniel brings extensive experience to the project, having worked on the previous five films in the franchise, including 2017’s Tom Cruise-led reboot. Additional producers include William Sherak, James Vanderbilt and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment, and Clayton Townsend. Fraser and Jason F. Brown of Hivemind will serve as executive producers.
