Orion Pictures, the specialty film label of Amazon MGM Studios, has scheduled a theatrical release for the thriller “The Hole” on June 25, 2027. The film is directed by Kim Jee-woon and features an ensemble cast including Theo James, Hoyeon, Yeom Hye-ran, and Christian Slater.
The narrative centers on an American professor residing in South Korea who experiences significant upheaval following his wife’s death in a traffic accident. As his Korean mother-in-law becomes his caregiver, she uncovers unexpected truths regarding his marriage and personal history. The story unfolds across two locations: Seoul and Berkeley, California, and is characterized as a suspenseful thriller.
The film adapts a 2016 Korean-language novel by Hye-young Pyun, with Christopher Chen handling the screenplay adaptation. Production involves collaboration among multiple studios, including Anthology Studios, K. Period Media, and Esmail Corp, while Department M and Medan provide financing and executive production support.
The release date places “The Hole” in competition with other major summer theatrical releases, including Warner Bros.’ untitled Ocean’s Eleven prequel, also arriving on June 25, 2027, directed by and starring Bradley Cooper alongside Margot Robbie, Wagner Moura, and Monica Barbaro.
Jee-woon’s directorial resume includes several prior features spanning multiple genres and scales, from international productions to Hollywood collaborations. James is recognized for his television work in Netflix’s “The Gentlemen” series and film appearances in various recent projects, while Hoyeon gained prominence through her role in Netflix’s “Squid Game.”
