This open-source project lets you sync Withings data to other apps without a subscription

Earlier this month, Withings announced that new users would need to subscribe to Withings Plus to sync health data from the company’s devices to third-party applications. The decision prompted developer Tom Anthony, who had grown dissatisfied with Withings’ mobile application, to create an alternative solution.

Anthony developed YourOwnWeigh, an open-source project designed to route user data away from Withings’ infrastructure and enable free wireless synchronization to other platforms and applications. The project is available on GitHub alongside setup instructions. According to Anthony, the solution operates as a web application that can run on a user’s own server or, for those without existing infrastructure, entirely on a free CloudFlare account given the minimal data volume involved.

The YourOwnWeigh web app performs multiple functions, including establishing a Bluetooth connection to update Withings scales with alternative firmware that directs data uploads to a non-Withings server configured by the user. Rather than hosting a copy of Withings’ firmware, the system downloads and modifies it as required. The application also imports the scale’s existing settings and user profiles while retrieving health data generated from regular weigh-in measurements.

To facilitate data integration with Apple Health, Anthony implemented Apple Shortcuts to establish a scheduled automation that retrieves Withings data from the alternate server and transfers it into the Apple Health application. Anthony has indicated interest in community contributions to expand compatibility with additional platforms, including Google Health. Currently, YourOwnWeigh supports only two older Withings scale models, though the developer suggests that expanded compatibility may be achievable if newer model firmware can be modified using similar techniques.
