A survey conducted by the Royal College of GPs found that 75% of family doctors lack adequate time to provide preventative healthcare advice, including guidance on smoking cessation, weight loss, sleep improvement, exercise, and medication review. The research, which involved 2,316 GPs across the UK, has raised concerns about the feasibility of the government’s stated goal to shift the NHS toward disease prevention.
The college’s president, Prof Victoria Tzortziou Brown, explained that the demands on general practice have created an environment where GPs must prioritize acute symptoms and immediate health concerns over longer-term preventative discussions. She noted that while GPs do provide routine preventative care, time constraints in consultations often prevent the type of detailed conversations needed to help patients understand their health risks and identify appropriate support or treatment options. The typical 10-minute appointment slot leaves insufficient space for holistic conversations about lifestyle changes.
Sarah Woolnough, chief executive of the King’s Fund health thinktank, characterized the findings as alarming, particularly given that UK life expectancy ranks among the lowest of comparable nations. She emphasized that GPs are frequently frustrated by their inability to provide the comprehensive care they were trained to deliver, and warned that the current staffing levels undermine efforts to identify and treat conditions at earlier stages.
The RCGP called for increased GP recruitment and longer consultation times to support prevention-focused care. A separate public opinion survey found that 64% of UK voters trust family doctors to offer healthy living advice—higher than trust in NHS websites, pharmacists, or other health information sources. The Department of Health and Social Care noted an investment of £1.7bn in general practice and the recruitment of 2,000 additional GPs, while stating that further work remains to modernize the NHS.
