Three in four UK GPs ‘too busy to talk to their patients in depth’

A survey conducted by the Royal College of GPs examining time pressures in UK general practice has revealed significant constraints on doctors’ ability to provide preventative healthcare services. The study of 2,316 GPs found that three out of four practitioners report insufficient time to engage in detailed discussions about lifestyle modifications, including smoking cessation, weight loss, sleep improvement, and exercise habits. The research also indicates that GPs struggle to review medications with patients to determine ongoing necessity.

The tight scheduling of appointments, typically lasting 10 minutes, was cited as a contributing factor to the limited opportunity for comprehensive health conversations. The college’s leadership noted that while GPs continue to address acute symptoms and conditions requiring investigation or treatment, the capacity to step back and consider patients’ long-term wellness has been compressed out of clinical schedules. The RCGP emphasized that meaningful preventative conversations—particularly those exploring patients’ motivations, barriers, and treatment preferences—require time that busy consultations often cannot accommodate.

The findings have prompted concern among health policy experts about the government’s stated objective to shift the NHS toward disease prevention. A separate public opinion survey of 2,000 UK voters, conducted by Censuswide for the RCGP, showed that 64% of the public trust family doctors for healthy living advice, a figure higher than trust in alternative sources such as NHS websites, pharmacists, or social media.

The Department of Health and Social Care responded by noting investments of £1.7bn into general practice and recruitment of 2,000 additional GPs, while acknowledging that further work remains necessary. The RCGP’s report calls for additional staffing and consultation time to enable GPs to fulfill preventative care objectives and identify health conditions at earlier stages.
