Trevor Jones obituary

Trevor Jones, known by the nickname “Gypsy,” passed away at 82 years old. Born in Faversham, Kent, to a teacher father and housewife mother, Jones attended Simon Langton school in Canterbury alongside future members of the Canterbury Scene progressive rock movement, including Robert Wyatt, Mike Ratledge, and Kevin Ayers.

Jones relocated to Tasmania in 1964 at age 20 with his parents and brother John, where they formed several bands and achieved Australian hit singles with groups including Chaos & Co, Mickey Finn, and Sweaty Betty. The brothers returned to the UK in 1971 and co-founded Anno Domini, a folk rock group that released the album “On This New Day.” Jones’s most notable musical contribution came through the progressive rock band Jonesy, which released three albums between 1972 and 1973: “No Alternative,” “Keeping Up,” and “Growing,” the latter earning critical recognition within the genre.

Following Jonesy’s breakup, Jones transitioned to session work and independent production, collaborating with artists including the Moody Blues and Ten Years After. He contributed to various creative projects, including the Lone Groover EP released in 1980 with cartoonist Tony Benyon and the album “Fantasy Shift” in 1983 with the band Here & Now. In the late 1980s, he worked as a record producer for the BBC, overseeing classical music recordings alongside other projects.

In 1994, Jones joined Eastbourne College of Arts and Technology as an instructor in radio production and performance. Two years later, he established a music performance and production department at the institution, developing course modules through degree level and serving as the college’s music course coordinator until his retirement in 2012. This educational initiative became influential, with similar programs subsequently adopted by institutions throughout the UK.

Jones is survived by his wife Dagmar, whom he married in 1981, and their two sons Damian and Toby.
