UK savings: 5% interest rate deals may not last, say experts

National Savings and Investments has increased returns on several of its accounts, with multiple products now offering rates exceeding 5%. This development reflects intensifying competition within the UK savings sector, which has produced some of the most attractive interest rates available in recent years.

The updated British savings bonds, which represent rebranded versions of the organization’s guaranteed growth and guaranteed income bonds, feature fixed interest rates across one-, two-, three-, and five-year terms. The one-year growth bond now offers 4.99%, up from 4.82%, while the five-year version has risen to 5.17% from 4.85%. These products are available to both new customers and those with maturing existing accounts. Growth bonds accumulate interest annually and distribute it upon maturity, whereas income bonds provide monthly interest payments.

Financial experts caution that such competitive rates typically remain available only temporarily. According to market analysts, when providers successfully attract sufficient deposits, they frequently withdraw the promotional products from the market. While NS&I’s rates are competitive, some analysts note that higher returns remain obtainable through alternative providers, with certain fixed-rate bonds reaching 5.37% for five-year terms. However, NS&I bonds offer distinct advantages, particularly for substantial investments, permitting deposits of up to £1 million per person per issue with a £500 minimum. Additionally, all savings are fully guaranteed by the Treasury, unlike traditional bank accounts which are protected only up to £120,000.

Other providers have simultaneously adjusted their rates. Starling Bank announced earlier this month that new customers opening Easy Saver accounts gain access to a 5% interest rate on balances up to £25,000, though this promotional rate includes a fixed bonus lasting six months. Marcus by Goldman Sachs increased its one-year fixed-rate savings account from 4.3% to 4.75%. Financial advisors recommend maintaining accessible accounts to address unforeseen expenses, as NS&I bonds cannot be withdrawn before term completion.
