Amazon MGM Studios is moving forward with a sequel to the 2024 romantic comedy Upgraded, with production commencing this month in Italy. Camila Mendes, who starred in and is executive producing the original film, will reprise her role for the follow-up. Director Becca Gleason has been tapped to helm Upgraded 2, which will be distributed globally on Prime Video.
The screenplay for the sequel comes from Luke Roberts and Justin Matthews, the same writing team behind the original picture. Production companies Gulfstream Pictures and Honor Role are handling the project, with a producing team that includes Mike Karz and Bill Bindley representing Gulfstream, Mendes and Rachel Matthews for Honor Role, Lena Roklin for Luber Roklin Entertainment, and Piers Tempest for Tempo Production. Specific plot details for the sequel have not been disclosed.
The original Upgraded premiered on Prime Video in February 2024 and received a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film followed Mendes’s character Ana, an art auction house intern whose circumstances shift after being upgraded to first-class seating on a flight to London. The cast included Archie Renaux and Marisa Tomei, with Carlson Young directing. Gulfstream Pictures financed the original feature. Gleason, making her feature directorial debut with Summer ’03 which premiered at SXSW, is also attached to direct an upcoming adaptation of Alice Is Missing for Paramount.
