UPS beats quarterly expectations, raises full-year guidance again

United Parcel Service announced third-quarter financial results on Tuesday that exceeded Wall Street consensus estimates, prompting the company to increase its full-year outlook for the second consecutive quarter. The logistics company now projects consolidated revenue of approximately $92.6 billion for the full year, an increase from its previous guidance of $91.2 billion. Additionally, UPS provided fourth-quarter revenue guidance of $25.7 billion.

For the quarter ended Sept. 30, the company reported net income of $1.16 billion, or $1.37 per share, compared with $1.31 billion, or $1.55 per share, in the year-prior period. On an adjusted basis excluding one-time expenses, UPS reported earnings per share of $1.69. Total revenue increased 6.7% to $22.9 billion. The company’s domestic segment generated a 4.5% revenue increase, while its international operations posted a 7.1% rise. The supply chain solutions business demonstrated particularly strong performance with an 18.2% revenue increase, driven primarily by growth in forwarding and logistics services, particularly within the healthcare sector. CEO Carol Tomé noted that healthcare revenue exceeded $3 billion for the third consecutive quarter.

Tomé attributed the performance gains to shifts in business strategy, stating the company is focusing on premium growth, improving revenue quality and mix, and creating greater operating leverage through network efficiency. UPS has undertaken a broader transformation under her leadership aimed at developing a leaner operational model and increasing automation capabilities.

Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, company leadership indicated the consumer environment remains resilient. Growth in average daily volume between the third and fourth quarters is expected to be consistent with the prior year. However, domestic average daily volume for the fourth quarter is anticipated to decline due to reductions in business with Amazon. The company stated that nearly 70% of all packages will be processed through automated systems during the holiday season.
