Vast Beatles museum, hailed as ‘extraordinary’ by Paul McCartney, to open in Liverpool in 2028

Liverpool is preparing to launch a significantly expanded Beatles museum set to open in 2028, according to announcements made by Apple Corps, the band’s company. The new 100,000 square foot facility will represent a major expansion of the existing Beatles Story, which has operated in the city’s Royal Albert Dock since 1990. Apple Corps will assume ownership of the museum, marking the first official Beatles fan experience in their home city under the band’s direct control.

The museum will relocate to the former St John’s Market shopping center, situated near Liverpool’s Lime Street railway station. This move will enable the attraction to grow to approximately four times its current size. Additionally, Apple Corps plans to renovate St Johns Beacon, a 450-foot tower that has been unused since 2024, transforming it into a separate attraction centered on the Beatles’ animated film Yellow Submarine.

The expanded Beatles Story is being developed as a multi-hour experience designed to recreate significant locations from the group’s history. Visitors will encounter recreated settings spanning from the band members’ childhood homes in Liverpool to historic performance venues including the Cavern Club, Hamburg nightclubs, Abbey Road, New York’s Shea Stadium, and the Savile Row rooftop where the Beatles performed their final concert in 1969. The project is being coordinated by Apple Corps in partnership with Liverpool city council and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, with UK government support.

A newly established charity, the Apple Corps Liverpool Trust, will receive a portion of ticket revenue to support initiatives benefiting local musicians. Both Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr have publicly endorsed the plans. The project comes as the band’s legacy continues to be developed through multiple channels, including a separate Beatles museum renovation at 3 Savile Row scheduled to open in 2027, and a four-film biographical project directed by Sam Mendes also arriving in 2028.
