Wellbeing support demand for cancer patients in Jersey grows

Macmillan Cancer Support Jersey has documented increasing demand for wellbeing services in its annual report covering 2025 and its five-year strategic period from 2021 to 2025. The organization noted substantial growth across multiple support categories during this timeframe.

Counselling and higher-level emotional support sessions increased from 407 in 2021 to 835 in 2025, representing a 105% rise. Complementary therapy sessions showed even greater expansion, climbing from 405 in 2021 to 965 in 2025, an increase of 138%. During 2025 alone, the charity delivered 4,253 support sessions to individuals affected by cancer, and 308 people accessed its drop-in cancer support and wellbeing centre without requiring a referral.

Steph Gibaut, chief executive officer of Macmillan Jersey, emphasized that the organization has transformed its approach to cancer support over the past five years by identifying needs earlier, offering more personalized care, and providing a broader range of emotional, practical and wellbeing services. A significant development was the formal launch of holistic needs assessments following a pilot phase. These assessments are designed to identify individuals’ physical, emotional, practical and financial needs at earlier stages of their cancer experience, enabling customized care plans.

Financially, the organization raised £963,090 in 2025 and invested £890,352 in its work. Over the entire five-year strategy period, the charity generated £4.38m in income and invested £3.44m in developing and delivering services. Notable fundraising efforts included the Tour des Pyrénées cycling challenge, which involved 52 cyclists completing a coast-to-coast route and raising £236,000.

Gibaut acknowledged that while achievements have been significant, demand continues to grow and population needs are evolving. The charity’s new strategy for 2026 to 2030 will prioritize expanding emotional, wellbeing and group support services while extending offerings for individuals living with and beyond cancer.
