A report presented at Mipcom by Spain’s GECA consultancy firm examined trends in Spanish television production during the first half of this year. The analysis, titled “Spanish Fiction 2026, Between New Stories and New Seasons,” revealed that Spanish fiction maintained a strong international position, ranking seventh among the world’s top producers of original series with a 5.2% share of global premieres during the first semester. The United States dominated the global market with 31.8% of all fiction premieres, followed by Japan and South Korea, which together accounted for the majority of worldwide output.
Within Spain itself, the domestic television market demonstrated robust growth. Spanish premieres expanded by 83% between 2021 and 2025, growing from 40 local fiction titles to 73. In the first half of this year, 30 new Spanish series premiered domestically, with an additional 24 releases scheduled for the remainder of the year. According to the report, three primary factors contributed to Spanish drama’s success: risk-taking by creators willing to challenge traditional genre boundaries, creative adaptation of established intellectual properties, and development of series with renewal potential.
Drama emerged as the dominant genre in the Spanish market, accounting for approximately 50% of all new releases. Crime, suspense, fantasy, and family drama variants represented the majority of drama offerings. Comedies followed as the second most popular category with 26.7% of premieres, while dramedies represented 13.3%. The report noted growing interest in genre crossovers, with series combining comedic and thriller elements gaining traction among Spanish audiences.
Streaming platforms proved to be the primary driver of Spanish television production, accounting for 90% of all premieres during the period. Netflix, Prime Video, Movistar Plus+, and Atresplayer each released four new titles, while the free video-on-demand service Primeran from regional broadcaster EITB contributed three series. Traditional linear television accounted for only three of the 30 premieres, underscoring the shift toward on-demand consumption patterns in the Spanish market.
