Sally Williams, from the Wychavon area, endured a three-year period during which her mental and physical health deteriorated significantly without a clear medical explanation. During this time, she was hospitalized on eight separate occasions, totaling nearly 11 months, and experienced multiple suicide attempts. The health crisis led her to leave her finance career and become separated from her teenage son, whom she was unable to care for during her illness.
Williams eventually determined through her own research that her symptoms were linked to perimenopause, the transitional period leading up to menopause. She described experiencing anxiety, mood swings, brain fog, hot flushes, and irregular periods. Medical professionals she initially consulted attributed her condition to depression rather than recognizing the underlying hormonal changes. After obtaining a perimenopause diagnosis and beginning hormone replacement therapy, which works by topping up and stabilizing estrogen levels sometimes in combination with progesterone, Williams reported a dramatic improvement in her health and quality of life.
Perimenopause typically begins around age 46 and represents a period when women continue to menstruate while experiencing menopausal symptoms. Williams emphasized the importance of raising awareness about this transitional phase, which she characterized as the “danger zone” spanning ages 45 to 54. She noted that while HRT proved beneficial for her recovery, the treatment may not be suitable for all women.
Williams plans to share her experience at Meno Fest, scheduled for 7 October at Worcester Rugby Club, as part of Menopause Awareness Month. The free public event aims to educate attendees about how perimenopause and menopause can impact physical health, mental wellbeing, relationships, work, and family dynamics. Williams stressed the importance of involving men in these conversations, noting that greater understanding from family members, partners, and adult children could help prevent the isolation and relationship breakdown she experienced.
