Yemen’s army claims over 1,500 Houthi casualties in past 24 hours

Yemen’s internationally recognised government military conducted approximately 500 operations that resulted in 1,540 Houthi casualties during a 24-hour period, according to statements from army officials. Colonel Majed Abdullah al-Nazili, a military spokesman, reported that the operations utilised warplanes, drones, artillery, missiles and rocket launchers to strike Houthi positions across multiple regions of the country. He indicated that the majority of the reported casualties occurred in the Taiz governorate, where he stated the military operations successfully halted Houthi advancement in that area.

Government forces closed the al-Houban crossing in Taiz on Saturday, citing security concerns. The crossing had been sealed for nine years before reopening in 2024 to allow civilian passage through humanitarian corridors. Army media official Ammar al-Sami’i explained that the recent closure followed Houthi infiltration attempts through the crossing, military skirmishes in the vicinity, and increased military activity in the region. The crossing serves as a critical link between Houthi-controlled and government-controlled territory.

The escalation represents a significant deterioration in the conflict following the collapse of a fragile ceasefire agreement established in 2022. Fighting intensified considerably starting in July of this year. In mid-September, Houthi forces advanced across western regions, capturing the port city of Mocha and controlling strategic islands in the Bab al-Mandeb strait, though anti-Houthi forces have since stabilised front lines in subsequent weeks.

The renewed fighting has displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians. Yemen has experienced ongoing civil conflict since the Houthis seized the capital of Sanaa in 2014, prompting the internationally recognised government to establish operations from Aden.
