YouTube has announced the implementation of a labeling system for music tracks that have been substantially created or modified through artificial intelligence technology. The label, titled “Made with AI,” will appear on the player page for tracks where generative AI played a significant role in creation, including instances where AI was used to generate compositions and vocals.
The platform indicated that the labeling requirement would not necessarily apply to all uses of AI tools in music production, but would focus on more substantial applications of the technology. Music partners uploading to YouTube are required to disclose their use of generative AI through the platform’s rules and guidelines. Should creators fail to provide such disclosure, YouTube stated it may rely on its own detection mechanisms and other signals to identify whether a song was AI-generated.
Tapping on the label will provide listeners with additional details about the AI involvement in a track’s creation. The rollout began in the YouTube Music application, with expansion to the main YouTube platform scheduled for a later date. YouTube’s approach mirrors its existing methodology for applying AI-related labels to video content across its ecosystem.
This initiative places YouTube among several major streaming platforms implementing AI transparency measures. Spotify introduced a voluntary AI label program earlier this year and stated it would refrain from recommending tracks created by AI personas. Apple Music is also reportedly developing an AI identification feature for its platform. Some competitors have taken more restrictive approaches, with Deezer offering users the ability to filter out AI-generated music entirely, and Bandcamp implementing a complete prohibition on AI-generated music uploads earlier this year.
