2027 Met Gala Unveils New “Everyday” Wear Theme After Galliano Controversy

The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute has unveiled a revised concept for the 2027 Met Gala after the cancellation of a planned exhibition honoring designer John Galliano. The new theme, titled extraORDINARY: fashion and the poetics of the everyday, will serve as the centerpiece for the May event and its accompanying museum exhibition.

The decision to develop an entirely new thematic direction came after Galliano withdrew from the gala in August following renewed controversy surrounding his past remarks, including antisemitic statements. Rather than replacing Galliano with another celebrated designer, curator Andrew Bolton elected to pursue a broader exploration of fashion that would prove equally challenging and provocative. Bolton stated he lacked an alternative plan and prioritized creating an exhibition with contemporary relevance rather than simply substituting one master designer for another.

The extraORDINARY exhibition will approach its subject from two distinct angles. The first examines the elevation of archetypal garments such as t-shirts and jeans into high fashion contexts. The second explores how humble and disposable materials—including paper, aluminum, and plastic—are transformed into wearable art forms. The exhibition will draw from the Met’s extensive fashion collection.

The gala itself is scheduled for May 3, 2027, with the public exhibition opening on May 9 and continuing through January 2028. Anna Wintour, Vogue’s global editorial director and a Met trustee, had overseen the original Galliano exhibition before its cancellation. Museum director and CEO Max Hollein stated the decision to abandon the Galliano project followed thoughtful discussions with the designer.
