Major automakers are increasingly adopting 3D printing technology across their manufacturing operations, citing significant cost reductions and production speed improvements. The technology, which builds three-dimensional objects layer by layer from digital designs using various materials including plastics, composites, ceramics and metals, has existed for decades but is becoming more widely integrated into automotive production.
Rivian has invested over $5 million in 3D-printing machines and spends approximately $1.7 million annually on materials, with company officials stating the equipment typically pays for itself within a year. The electric vehicle manufacturer uses the technology to create vehicle components, assembly tools, and testing units while reducing production times from weeks to days or hours. Rivian is expanding its capabilities by adding machines that can produce flexible silicone parts and installing printing bays at its Illinois facility for on-demand part manufacturing by employees.
Ford operates 3D-printing departments at numerous plants and plans to have labs deployed at more than 23 facilities by the end of this year, with over 200 machines currently in use across the company. The automaker has installed a vending machine at its Dearborn headquarters that dispenses 3D-printed parts needed for F-150 production, allowing team leaders quick access to tools and components designed by employees. Ford has used the technology to produce specialized tools such as torque sockets and hood jackers, as well as critical parts needed to maintain production continuity when supplier components are unavailable.
General Motors uses 135 components that are 3D-printed for its Cadillac Celestiq luxury vehicles and other components for its Cadillac Blackwing sedans. Industry analysts note that improvements in material properties have expanded the potential applications for 3D printing in automotive manufacturing. As the technology becomes more commoditized and accessible, automakers are standardizing and scaling production across their organizations.
