Channel 4 axes Married at First Sight UK after rape allegations

Channel 4 announced the cancellation of Married at First Sight UK after two women alleged they were raped during filming and a third reported being subjected to a nonconsensual sex act. The broadcaster removed all episodes from its streaming and linear services, along with associated social media channels, following the allegations being broadcast on BBC’s Panorama in May.

The reality format, in which single individuals marry strangers they meet for the first time at the ceremony, had become one of Channel 4’s most popular programs over its 10-year run. Two independent reviews were commissioned in response to the allegations. A review led by former BBC One controller Lorraine Heggessey examined current safeguards and determined the show could continue with enhancements to contributor welfare measures and format modifications. A separate review by law firm Clyde & Co assessed protocols in place at the time of the alleged incidents and found certain areas where the welfare framework could have been strengthened, though it concluded existing protocols aligned with Ofcom broadcasting standards.

Despite the reviews’ findings that safeguards were extensive and that continuation would be reasonable with improvements, Channel 4 chief executive Priya Dogra determined that implementing all recommendations would fundamentally alter the show’s core premise. Dogra stated the network considered it an appropriate time to move away from the format after a decade on air. Series six, which was in production when the review commenced, will not be broadcast, as it was not made under the strengthened protocols. A planned spin-off titled Second Married at First Sight, which was in pre-production, will not proceed.

Lia Perin, representing one of the contributors whose allegation featured in the Panorama programme, criticized the review findings, stating they “raise more questions than they answer.” She highlighted concerns that the show’s format was deliberately designed to create drama through elements that heightened conflict and pressured participants toward intimate situations.
