Anthropic has unveiled a Personal Finance feature for Claude that enables the AI assistant to connect directly to users’ bank and card accounts through the Plaid platform. The feature allows users to ask Claude questions about their financial habits, such as spending patterns, upcoming bills, and potential savings opportunities.
The connection operates on a read-only basis, with Plaid serving as the intermediary to protect sensitive information. Claude does not gain access to banking passwords, and financial institutions are not required to manage direct AI integrations into their systems. The AI can view bank names, account designations, account types, the last four digits of account numbers, current balances, credit limits, and transaction history spanning up to two years.
According to Anthropic, Claude cannot move funds, manage investments, or provide investment guidance. However, it can assist users by explaining financial terminology and answering questions related to account balances and transaction details. The company notes that the feature is designed for informational purposes and recommends that users consult with licensed professionals and regulated financial firms for significant financial decisions.
The rollout began this week in beta form, available to Claude Pro, Max, and Ultra subscribers in the US. This development follows OpenAI’s introduction of a comparable feature for ChatGPT in May, which similarly integrates with bank accounts through Plaid. Anthropic indicated in its announcement that the Personal Finance tool represents an initial step, with plans to explore deeper integration between Claude and professional financial services firms in the future.
