Craig Silvey: Australian author sentenced to prison over child exploitation offences

Craig Silvey, the 44-year-old author of the award-winning young adult novel Jasper Jones and children’s book Runt, received a seven-month prison sentence for possessing and distributing child exploitation material. Judge Hayley Cormann described his conduct as “repulsive” and “degrading” while delivering the sentence.

Silvey was arrested in January following a police raid on his Western Australia home, during which authorities seized multiple electronic devices. He pleaded guilty to the charges in May. At the time of the police raid, officers discovered that Silvey had online conversations open discussing child exploitation. In these chats, he described himself as “extremely open minded” and “obsessed with taboos,” and discussed his sexual interest in children as young as five with another user on a pornography site. Detectives also found images and videos depicting child abuse on his devices. He was initially charged with four offences, though prosecutors later dropped two of them.

Prosecutors argued that Silvey’s actions contributed to the “cycle of abuse” affecting child victims and sought a severe sentence. Silvey’s defence lawyer contended that he did not have a sexual interest in children and characterized his behaviour as seeking out explicit material as a form of psychological self-harm. She also noted that Silvey had displayed remorse and argued that his high-profile status and resulting media attention—which prompted his former partner and children to relocate interstate—already constituted significant punishment.

Judge Cormann rejected most of these arguments, emphasizing the severity of the offending and the lasting trauma experienced by victims. The seven-month sentence was backdated to 22 October, and Silvey is eligible for parole. Following his arrest, publishers and retailers removed his works from circulation, and some schools removed Jasper Jones from their teaching curricula.
