Ben Leonberg is set to direct and co-write a feature film based on “Look Out,” a horror novella created through a partnership between Vertigo Entertainment and Artists Writers and Artisans. The project is being developed through Republic Pictures, with Leonberg collaborating on the screenplay with Alex Cannon, who previously contributed to Leonberg’s directorial debut.
The novella, written by Dan Baillie with artwork by Tim Bradstreet, was released earlier this year as part of the “Future of Fear” partnership between the two publishing entities. According to the story’s official description, the narrative centers on a character named Oscar who takes employment as a fire lookout at an isolated forest station while recovering from a divorce. During his tenure at the remote location, he encounters a piece of paper containing an unusual set of rules that purportedly offer protection throughout his watch.
Production duties on the film will be handled by Roy Lee and Andrew Childs from Vertigo Entertainment, alongside Zach Studin representing AWA. Leonberg recently gained recognition in the horror genre following his feature directorial debut with “Good Boy,” which premiered at a major film festival. The project stars a dog in the lead role and follows the animal’s efforts to shield its owner from a supernatural threat. The film was subsequently acquired by distribution entities IFC Films and Shudder.
Beyond the “Look Out” adaptation, Leonberg has additional horror projects in development. He is working on “Ankle Snatcher” for Sony Pictures, adapting material from author Grady Hendrix in collaboration with Cannon. Additionally, his original horror feature “Follow Mode,” which he wrote and directed with Temple Hill producing, is currently undergoing post-production work and follows a group of teenagers who disable a drone, discovering it contains footage related to an active serial killer.
