Janet Davies, who passed away at 89, devoted much of her career to international development and interfaith collaboration. From 1968 to 1986, she served Christian Aid in the Merseyside and northwest regions of England, eventually becoming regional organiser. Operating from Liverpool with support from Edward Patey, then dean of the city, Davies utilized her communication and networking abilities to build grassroots coalitions across religious denominations. Her efforts contributed to Christian Aid Week initiatives and helped establish the Merseyside Churches Ecumenical Council, which supported the later “Better Together” partnership between Bishop David Sheppard and Archbishop Derek Worlock.
Born and raised in Formby, Lancashire, Davies trained as a secretary before meeting her future husband, Alan Davies, an occupational therapist, at the Southport Gramophone Society in 1968. She was known for her musical abilities as a pianist and choral singer. Davies traveled extensively for Christian Aid, witnessing poverty conditions in Calcutta in 1975 and observing racial segregation in South Africa during the late 1970s and early 1980s. These experiences significantly influenced her spiritual perspective. She became recognized as a compelling speaker, notably addressing an audience of 1,500 at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall in 1985 when receiving a cheque for Christian Aid’s Ethiopian famine appeal.
In 1994, Davies completed a theology certificate from Birmingham University. Following a visit to Lebanon and the occupied Palestinian Territories in 1982, she contributed to a 2000 edited volume on Western Christian perspectives of the Holy Land, reflecting on peace and justice needs in the region. She subsequently directed Middle East peace advocacy programs for USPG and the United Reformed Church during the 1990s, and later established Sabeel-Kairos UK, a charity supporting the Palestinian Christian community. Davies is survived by a sibling and nine nieces and nephews.
