Kobo will soon let you upload and sync your own ebooks across devices, for a price

Kobo is introducing Stack, a new subscription service that enables users to upload personal ebooks and documents to cloud servers for synchronization across multiple devices and platforms. The service supports EPUB and PDF files up to 200MB in size, with uploads available through a drag-and-drop website interface or email delivery to a custom address provided upon subscription. Users can access their uploaded content through iOS and Android applications, the Kobo website, and compatible e-readers, with their reading progress, highlights, and annotations automatically synced across platforms.

The Stack feature is being rolled out as part of Kobo’s software version 6.0 update, currently available in beta form. While the service offers functionality comparable to Amazon’s Send to Kindle program, Stack requires a paid subscription. Current device support includes the Clara BW, Clara Colour, Libra Colour, and Elipsa 2E e-readers, with compatibility for older devices manufactured between 2018 and 2024 planned for later. Kobo is offering prospective subscribers a 90-day free trial period.

Initial availability of Stack is limited to Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and Spain, with pricing set at $3.99 per month in Canada and £2.99 per month in the UK. The US market is not included in the initial rollout. Subscribers who choose to cancel receive a 60-day grace period to download, back up, and export their uploaded files and associated notes. After this window expires, all uploaded content is permanently deleted from Kobo’s servers.

The version 6.0 firmware update introduces additional capabilities beyond the Stack service, including support for multiple library card integration through the Libby borrowing platform, reduced stylus latency for pen-enabled devices, expanded font size options for accessibility purposes, and compatibility with EPUB files protected by LCP DRM encryption.
