Maya Jama announced on Sunday that she will be departing her role as host of “Love Island U.K.” after nine seasons with the dating competition series. The presenter stated in an Instagram announcement that she felt the timing was appropriate to transition to other endeavors.
Jama assumed the hosting position in 2023, replacing previous host Laura Whitmore. During her tenure, her career trajectory expanded significantly. She appeared as a contestant on the second season of “Celebrity Traitors,” where she remained in the competition through the final episode as one of the original Traitors. Additionally, she made her acting debut this year in the second season of Guy Ritchie’s “The Gentlemen,” which received critical acclaim.
In her departure statement, Jama expressed gratitude to multiple parties involved with the show, including viewers, production staff, and those who supported her appointment as host. She reflected on her experience hosting nine seasons beginning at age 28, noting her appreciation for various elements of the production including the show’s signature slow-motion walks and fire pit scenes.
Prior to her work on “Love Island U.K.,” Jama established herself in media as one of the youngest BBC Radio One disc jockeys. She framed her exit as part of her personal growth philosophy, indicating that taking new professional opportunities was important to her continued development.
