‘Robopocalypse’ TV Show in the Works With Ron Howard, Akiva Goldsman

Imagine Entertainment and Weed Road are in development on a limited series based on Robopocalypse, the 2011 science fiction novel by Daniel H. Wilson. Ron Howard will direct the pilot episode while Akiva Goldsman will serve as showrunner and co-write the pilot. The project does not yet have a network or streaming platform attached.

The source material has had a lengthy development history in Hollywood. Steven Spielberg originally optioned the book to direct before its publication, commissioning a script draft from Drew Goddard. The project remained in development for several years with actors Anne Hathaway and Chris Hemsworth attached at various points. Spielberg postponed the initiative indefinitely in 2014, and Michael Bay subsequently joined as director in 2018, though that version ultimately did not move forward to production.

Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment will now serve as executive producer on the television adaptation. Additional producers include Imagine’s Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody, as well as Weed Pictures’ Greg Lessans and Rachel Wizenberg. The novel follows humanity’s struggle against artificially intelligent robots that turn hostile, depicting a coordinated global resistance effort following a coordinated attack known as Zero Hour.

Howard and Goldsman have collaborated extensively throughout their careers, beginning with A Beautiful Mind, which received Academy Awards for best director and best picture, with Goldsman winning best adapted screenplay. The pair also worked together on The Da Vinci Code, a 2006 adaptation of Dan Brown’s novel that grossed over $760 million worldwide.
