Saudi-led coalition intercepts a missile as fighting rages in Yemen’s al-Jawf

The Saudi-led coalition announced that air defence systems successfully intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by Houthi forces toward Saudi Arabia’s southern region on Monday. Coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Maliki confirmed the interception, noting that air defences had also destroyed a drone targeting the same area the previous evening. The Saudi Civil Defence authority issued temporary alerts for multiple cities and provinces including Abha, Khamis Mushait, Taif, and Najran before later lifting the warnings.

Houthi-affiliated media outlets reported that coalition air strikes struck multiple targets in the Red Sea coastal area of Hodeidah, resulting in seven wounded individuals. According to Houthi reports, four people were injured at Ras Isa port and three others at an oil company facility in the Bajil district. The coalition did not respond to these reports.

Meanwhile, Yemeni government forces maintained offensive operations against Houthi positions in the strategic al-Jawf governorate and adjacent regions. Government military spokesman Colonel Majed Abdullah al-Nazili stated that forces conducted over 1,200 targeting operations within a 24-hour period, claiming approximately 500 Houthi fighters were killed and substantial weaponry was destroyed or disabled. Operations continued simultaneously in the Marib and al-Bayda governorates.

In southwest Yemen, the humanitarian situation deteriorated as Houthis maintained a siege on Taiz, restricting supplies of food, fuel, and medicine. Taiz Governor Nabil Shamsan reported that 120 health centres have ceased operations while another 66 face potential closure since supply routes were blocked in early October. The blockade has impeded aid efforts, with at least 23 supply trucks damaged or overturned attempting alternative routes during the past two weeks. Taiz, home to approximately one million people, represents Yemen’s third-largest city.

Intensified fighting resumed in Yemen in September following significant Houthi territorial gains along the Red Sea coast. The internationally recognised Yemeni government launched Operation Dawn of Yemen last month to reclaim areas controlled by the Houthis, who captured the capital Sanaa in 2014.
