Deutsche Telekom Chief Executive Tim Höttges addressed SpaceX’s ambitions to launch Starlink Mobile as a competitor to established US wireless carriers during a company earnings call. Höttges stated that while he takes the Elon Musk-led company’s plans seriously, the financial barriers to entry are substantial. He outlined a detailed breakdown of the costs involved in building a competitive wireless network.
According to Höttges, spectrum acquisition represents a significant initial expense. SpaceX has currently secured 76 megahertz of spectrum, compared to Deutsche Telekom’s 400 megahertz, requiring hundreds of billions of dollars to achieve a competitive position through additional spectrum purchases. Beyond spectrum, Höttges noted that physical infrastructure costs would be considerable, citing the need for approximately $20 to $30 billion to secure cell tower capacity or access. The company’s assessment is that establishing Starlink Mobile as a genuine competitor would require a minimum investment of $200 billion.
SpaceX announced its plans for Starlink Mobile last month, intending to combine direct-to-cell satellite technology with terrestrial network infrastructure. Reports have suggested that SpaceX could leverage access to approximately 80,000 cell towers across the United States. Additionally, Qualcomm announced this week that SpaceX will utilize its cellular infrastructure technology for Starlink Mobile’s network development.
Despite his skepticism about the financial feasibility, Höttges acknowledged that Starlink Mobile could pose a meaningful competitive threat by creating a differentiated service offering. He noted that Musk’s broader portfolio—including chipsets, data centers, artificial intelligence capabilities, and satellites—could enable SpaceX to integrate additional services such as social media or AI-powered agent models into its wireless offering, distinguishing it from traditional carriers. Höttges drew parallels to technological disruption in the automotive industry, emphasizing the importance of taking emerging competitors seriously.
