Sofia Demetriades, an 18-year-old undergraduate at the Royal Academy of Music, has been named the winner of BBC Young Musician 2026. Her performance of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto impressed judges Joanna MacGregor, Ben Gernon, and Errollyn Wallen, who characterized her playing as demonstrating maturity, poetry, and exceptional sensitivity. The competition final marked a historic milestone as the first all-female lineup of finalists competing for the title.
The biennial BBC competition, established in 1978 by Humphrey Burton, attracted several hundred applicants who submitted video auditions. Forty players were selected for live auditions at Bath Spa University, with eight advancing to the quarter-finals. The quarter-final stage took place on Demetriades’ 18th birthday. Notable participants included Sylvester Maschi, a 14-year-old accordion player, who became the first accordionist to reach the final stages of the competition.
The three finalists performed concertos with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, conducted by Alpesh Chauhan, in a concert at Bristol Beacon. Competing alongside Demetriades were 18-year-old saxophonist Kezia Colton, who performed Takashi Yoshimatsu’s Cyber Bird Saxophone Concerto, and 17-year-old recorder player Alma Nunez Debretzeni, who played Graham Fitkin’s Recorder Concerto. The Fitkin concerto featured six different recorders ranging from a 1.6-meter contrabass to a sopranino, and the performance included a guest appearance from Jordan Ashman, the competition’s 2022 overall winner.
Demetriades receives a £3,000 cash prize toward music studies, along with recording and broadcast opportunities on BBC Radio 3, including potential performances with BBC ensembles. All three finalists will receive career management support through Young Classical Artists Trust. Previous BBC Young Musician winners and finalists have included Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Alison Balsom, Stephen Hough, and Nicola Benedetti, who was the last violinist to win in 2004.
