Tesla has announced plans to discontinue Cybertruck production at its Texas manufacturing facility around the middle of next year, redirecting the plant’s capacity toward the Cybercab autonomous vehicle. The decision reflects a strategic pivot by CEO Elon Musk toward robotics, artificial intelligence, and self-driving technology rather than traditional passenger vehicle development.
The Cybertruck, which began customer deliveries in late 2023 following extended delays, failed to achieve the production volumes Musk had originally envisioned. The company initially targeted annual sales of 200,000 units but fell substantially short of this goal. In the third quarter of this year, Tesla delivered only 8,300 vehicles classified as “other models,” which includes the Cybertruck, while its mainstream offerings—the Model 3 and Model Y—accounted for 478,000 combined deliveries. The vehicle also never reached European markets due to failing to meet required safety standards.
Musk has previously acknowledged the challenges associated with Cybertruck production. During a 2023 earnings call, he characterized the development effort as having created significant difficulties, citing manufacturing complexity and profitability concerns. Tesla has not publicly confirmed whether Cybertruck production will resume at alternative facilities, though such a move would require substantial investment in specialized manufacturing equipment.
The discontinuation represents another instance of Tesla consolidating its vehicle lineup. The company halted production of its Model S and Model X premium vehicles this year amid declining demand. Instead, Tesla is prioritizing the Cybercab, a two-passenger autonomous taxi with no steering wheel that is currently undergoing limited paid testing in Austin, Texas. The company is also ramping up production of its long-delayed Semi electric truck and plans to introduce a road-bound Roadster sportscar in 2028. The Texas facility will additionally be used to manufacture Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robot.
