Philippe Peythieu and Véronique Augereau have provided the French voices for Homer and Marge Simpson since the show debuted in France. The pair first encountered each other at a casting call in 1989, though they were not initially close, as evidenced by archival footage showing them passing without acknowledgment at a wrap party. Through their collaborative work in the recording studio, their professional relationship gradually deepened into a personal one.
The actors began working together on the dubbing sessions, which take place over 10-12 days annually in a Paris studio. Their shared enthusiasm for the show and its creative direction fostered a friendly atmosphere that contributed to their growing connection. Eventually, their relationship became public knowledge within their professional circles, and they subsequently married.
Peythieu and Augereau have become closely identified with their roles, receiving recognition from series creator Matt Groening for their contributions to the show’s international success. They have expressed a strong commitment to continuing their work together, explicitly rejecting the possibility of artificial intelligence replacing voice performers in the future. Both actors emphasize that the role requires human artistry and emotional depth that cannot be replicated by technology.
Throughout their tenure, the actors have witnessed Homer and Marge’s relationship navigate various challenges across 38 seasons, from separation to reconciliation. They view the couple’s enduring commitment to one another as central to the show’s appeal, noting that despite Homer’s numerous flaws and mistakes, his certainty about Marge remains constant. The voice actors’ real-life partnership has paralleled the fictional couple they portray, making their professional and personal lives deeply intertwined with the animated series.
