Volkswagen Q3 Loss Largest Since Dieselgate

The Volkswagen Group announced its most significant quarterly loss in over a decade, posting an operating loss of €5.86 billion for the period ending September 30, 2027. The substantial write-down of Porsche assets accounted for much of the loss, while the company also contended with declining sales in China and the impact of tariffs affecting vehicle imports into the United States. Chief Financial Officer Arno Antlitz emphasized the urgency of the situation in a video statement, stressing the need for swift and decisive action.

Compared to the same quarter the previous year, the operating loss was approximately four times larger. Revenue declined 6.3 percent year-over-year to €75.3 billion, with customer deliveries, unit sales, and production levels all falling roughly 15 percent as the company adjusted manufacturing to align with reduced demand. For the nine-month period through September, Volkswagen generated €233.4 billion in gross sales, nearly flat with the prior year period, though sales volume dropped 11 percent relative to 2025, indicating the company sold fewer vehicles at higher prices.

Operating profit for the nine-month period reached just €0.1 billion, compared with €5.4 billion in the prior year, due in part to €8.7 billion in special items including a €6.4 billion non-cash Porsche write-down. Volkswagen revised its full-year profit margin forecast to 1 percent, significantly lower than the 5 percent projection made at the beginning of the year.

Despite broader challenges, battery electric vehicle sales increased 39 percent year-over-year. In China, Volkswagen and its joint venture partners have developed new technology platforms—the China Main Platform and China Scalable Platform—designed for battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models with advanced charging capabilities and autonomous driver assistance systems. The company is also expanding production and exports of China-made vehicles to markets across the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America, representing a strategic shift from a sales-focused to a research and export-oriented presence in the region.
