Senator Mitch McConnell released a statement confirming his recent hospitalization following a fall in mid-June that left him briefly unconscious. The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican was taken to the hospital, where he underwent extensive medical testing. He reported that doctors confirmed he did not suffer a broken bone, concussion, heart attack, stroke, tumor, or hemorrhage.
In his statement, McConnell addressed weeks of public speculation about his health and acknowledged the difficulty of discussing personal health matters in public. He referenced his childhood polio diagnosis, which he contracted at age two and resulted in partial paralysis of his left leg. He noted that the ongoing mobility challenges associated with polio have become more difficult to manage with age and contributed to his recent fall. During his hospitalization, he also contracted a mild case of pneumonia.
McConnell stated he is now receiving care at a rehabilitation facility rather than remaining hospitalized. On the advice of his doctors, he will not be able to return to the Senate floor to vote in the near term, though he indicated his intention to complete his work before the end of his current term. He noted that he had previously announced his retirement from the Senate at the end of his term in January, citing the demanding nature of Senate work.
His office released a photograph showing McConnell with his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao. The timing of the photo’s release came after scrutiny regarding Chao’s travel to China in mid-June while her husband was hospitalized, with her office previously stating that his health condition did not warrant her immediate return from the trip.
McConnell’s hospitalization prompted calls for transparency from Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, a Democrat, who had sent a letter urging the senator to provide health updates amid public concerns about his capacity to hold office. McConnell has experienced several health issues in recent years, including a trip-related injury in 2024 and a flu-related hospitalization earlier in 2024.
